The ceremony represents the internal spiritual bond of the couple who will live the rest of their lives as one spirit. The ceremony starts with a floral cleansing of the couple which symbolizes the start of a new life together. Immediately after, an offering to Pachamama is made which consists of various items including flowers, seeds, colorful wool, coca leaves, chicha and more. During the ceremony the shaman will perform various different blessings and prayers to invoke divine protection for the couple.
The ceremony is traditionally a festivity for the whole community bringing together the whole village in Incan and pre-Incan times. Family and close friends take part in some of the rituals which strengthens the bond not only between the couple but the entire community as a whole.
